Research and Projects - The Workshop on Education and Training for Permanent Resident Overseas Trained Doctors, Wellington, New Zealand 6-8 August 2003

Mr Greg Jemsek
Mr Greg Jemsek is the Cordinator of Medical Education and Training, Goulburn Valley Health
He is a member of the PMCV committee for Overseas Trained Doctors, and oversees training for overseas trained doctors at Goulburn Valley Health, the third largest employer of OTDs in Victoria.

Professor Barry McGrath
Professor Barry McGrath is the Chair of the Postgraduate medical Council of Victoria, chairs the OTDs Committee and the Victorian OTDs Assessment Consortium, and is a member of the MTRP committee on OTDs. He is deputy Chair of the CPMEC and is on the national Board of Examiners for the AMC.

Dr Deborah Read
Dr Deborah Read is the Deputy President of the Medical Council of New Zealand and Chair of the Council's Education Committee. She is the National Director of Training for the New Zealand Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine Training Program and a member of the New Zealand Medical Women's Association.

Dr Alexandra Cockram
Dr Alex Cockram Chairs the Medical Training Review Panel working group on Overseas Trained Doctors. This group is considering the procedures, assessments and needs of Overseas Trained Doctors and the responsibilities of the organisations involved.

Mr Ian Frank
Mr Ian Frank is the Executive Officer of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) the national standards advisory body for medical education in Australia. The AMC has the role of assessing overseas trained doctors who wish to practice medicine in Australia.

Ms Sue Ineson
Ms Sue Ineson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Council of New Zealand is the statutory body authorised to register doctors to practice medicine in New Zealand. In addition to registration the Council has responsibilities in the areas of doctors education, standards, conduct and health.

Overview

The participants included overseas trained doctors, and representatives of educational, professional and regulatory bodies and health services. More than 90 people attended the workshop facilitated by Dr Norman Swan radio presenter and medical commentator.

Workshop participants identified gaps in the education and training of overseas trained doctors, and developed strategies to overcome these.

The workshop was very successful in providing a forum for the sharing of information and ideas and for promoting networks at an individual and organisational level.
